"A regular handheld umbrella, particularly a dark-colored one, is a surprisingly effective and practical tool that can block 77% to over 95% of UV rays."
When it comes to sun protection, most of us think of:
- Sunscreen
- Hats
- Long sleeves
But what about a regular rain umbrella? Could it help?
A study published in JAMA Dermatology set out to measure exactly how much UV is blocked by handheld umbrellas.
- The Study
Researchers tested 23 umbrellas to see how much UV-A and UV-B light passed through the fabric and reached the face beneath the umbrella.
Conditions:
- Sunny midday sun exposure
- ☀️ UV Index = 8 (Very High)
- Key Findings
- All umbrellas blocked at least 77% of UV rays.
- Black umbrellas performed best among standard rain umbrellas — most blocked 95% or more.
- White umbrellas blocked as little as 77%.
- What This Means
An umbrella — especially a dark-colored one — can be a powerful and practical tool for sun protection.
